Dr. Winokur was born in New York City, New York. He received his Bachelor of Science from S.U.N.Y College at Cortland.
His father was a small animal veterinarian who had a solo practice in Larchmont, NY. He spent a few summers and the year after college graduation working at his father's practice. This provided the motivation for Dr. Winokur to pursue a life in the field of veterinary medicine. He moved to Georgia to attend the Veterinary College at the University of Georgia. Prior to matriculation at Georgia, he worked towards a Master's Degree at Emory Medical School in the physiology department. As a grad student, an Atlanta lacrosse teammate and employee of PRAH introduced him to Dr. Petty. Thereafter, he worked as a technician for the late Dr. Nick Petty and Dr. Ben Tucker, the previous owners of Pharr Road Animal Hospital. In 2012, Drs. Winokur and Almand bought the practice. Drs. Winokur and Almand have two daughters, Jamie and Dani and two cats Franklin and Bitsy. Dani is adulting in Atlanta with degrees from Georgia State. Jamie is a double dog graduating in 2021 with a DVM degree from UGA, and pulled off a beautiful COVID wedding with Kyle in June 2020. Jamie and Kyle welcomed a beautiful baby boy Elliott Quinn to the family in March 2022.
In 2020, Dr. Winokur and Dr. Almand were recipients of UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine distinguished alumni award. In honor of all of their clients, patients and colleagues, Drs. Winokur and Almand have endowed a student scholarship and The Practice Management Fund at UGACVM.
In his free time, Dr. Winokur loves to practice yoga and spend time outdoors hiking and paddleboarding. He has also been known to chase down his favorite bands.
